Can we detect and study gravitational waves?

Gravitational waves are ripples in the fabric of spacetime that are caused by the acceleration of massive objects. They were first predicted by Albert Einstein in his theory of general relativity in 1916, but it took nearly a century for scientists to develop the technology necessary to detect them. In 2015, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) made the first direct detection of gravitational waves. LIGO uses a laser interferometer to measure the distance between two mirrors to an accuracy of one-ten-thousandth the diameter of a proton. When a gravitational wave passes through the Earth, it causes a very small change in the distance between the mirrors. This change is so small that it is equivalent to the distance a proton would move if it were located at the edge of the observable universe.
